it was designed and manufactured as a field and combat knife with the advantage to be used as a bayonet, fitting it to the tactical assault rifle StG 77 (Steyr AUG) in .223 NATO caliber (5,56 mm x 45 mm cartridge). Note: obviously, the austrian StG 77 must have the appropriate adapter designed for this Feldmesser, because normally, the AUG for export has the system to fix bayonets such as the US M7, KCB 77 or similar (and not in all rifles, that feature depends on the sale contracts).

Identification Marks:
it shows the old logo from the company of a circular form with the word GLOCK (corresponding to the surname of its founder) stamped on the left ricasso of its blade with the addition of the number 78 (indicating the model of this knife: Feldmesser 78); the same logo on the left side and middle of its hilt, and finally and also the same mentioned logo on the left side of the throat from its scabbard.

Features and some Observations:
straight blade with clip (bowie) type point, no fullers, single-edged with a wide false edge, a two-tone appearance (blueing coverage with vermillion red in certain places) and its carbon steel blade has a maximum hardness of 55 HRC. Its steel crossguard has the same blueing of the blade and it shows an upper extension with a bent forward inclination. Its hilt remembers the type used in the US M3, and it´s built in a high resistance polymer material developed by the same Austrian company (Wikipedia English version calls it Glock-polymer) having a rough texture and an oval shape, but it delivers a comfortable grip for either hand. The area of ​​the join between crossguard and hilt shows two rectangular slots located on both sides and they allow to introduce the inner nail from the notorious key that belongs to the throat of the scabbard which it serves to secure the knife inside the plastic sheath in any position that its user wants. The end of its hilt shows the back of a plug belonging to the integrated pommel which when the plug is removed, it reveals a cylindrical chamber with enough depth to insert the bayonet lug/support of the StG 77 and adjust it with the help of its side by side pommel holes. About the scabbard, it´s enterily made with Glock-polymer without need of metal parts but with 4 features such as the wide hole at its finial point (it helps to a correct water drainage); the robust key that helps to keep the knife firmly attached inside its scabbard; the integrated frog that it allows to introduce a combat belt or it can be hanged to the same one releasing the rear structure of its frog; and finally the protuberance with a wide hole that it is part of the rear finial structure of the polymer scabbard allowing to introduce a cord for a correct securing of the scabbard to the leg of its user (or maybe it can be adjusted in one of the two frontal strips of a harness and have it prepared for a close combat).

hoja recta con punta tipo clip (bowie), sin váceos, de un solo filo con un ancho contrafilo, apariencia bicolor (cobertura con pavonado y rojo bermellón en ciertos lugares) y su hoja de acero al carbono tiene una dureza máxima de 55 HRC. Su guarda de acero tiene el mismo pavonado de la hoja y muestra una extensión superior con inclinación curva hacia adelante. Su empuñadura recuerda al tipo utilizado en el US M3 y está construido en un material de polímero de alta resistencia desarrollado por la misma compañía austriaca (la versión en inglés de Wikipedia lo llama polímero-Glock) con una textura rugosa y una forma ovalada, pero ofrece un cómodo agarre para ambas manos. El área de la unión entre guarda y empuñadura muestra dos ranuras rectangulares ubicadas a ambos lados y permiten introducir la uña interna de la notoria tecla que pertenece al brocal de la vaina la cuál sirve para asegurar el cuchillo dentro de la funda de plástico en cualquier posición que su usuario quiera. El extremo de su empuñadura muestra la parte posterior de un tapón que pertenece al pomo integrado el cuál cuando se quita, revela una cámara cilíndrica con suficiente profundidad para introducir el soporte para bayoneta del StG 77 y ajustarlo con la ayuda de sus agujeros de pomo de lado a lado. Acerca de la vaina, está hecha enteramente con polímero Glock sin necesidad de piezas metálicas pero con 4 características como el orificio ancho en su punta (ayuda a un correcto drenaje de agua); la robusta tecla que ayuda a retener el cuchillo firmemente sujeto dentro de su vaina; el tahalí integrado que permite introducir un cinturón de combate o puede ser colgado al mismo liberando la estructura trasera de su tahalí; y finalmente, la protuberancia con un amplio orificio que forma parte de la estructura de la parte posterior de la funda de polímero, lo que permite introducir una cuerda para un seguro correcto de la funda a la pierna del usuario (o tal vez pueda ajustarse en una de los dos tiras frontales de un arnés y tenerlo listo para un combate cerrado). 

Comment:
this field knife has an excellent design and innovative construction, high quality and resistance, it´s comfortable, economical, and 100% functional (Do you remember the slogan "Glock Perfection"?). My Feldmesser is a commercial model manufactured by the Austrian company only for that purpose, nonetheless this type of knife is the same that the one that was developed exclusively for the Armed Forces belonging to that country; but the difference is that the militar example was stamped on the left ricasso of its blade with the letters BH (BH means BundesHeer = in German translation would be Federal Army); and in addition, it´s possible to observe other mark: an inverted triangle within a circle (this is the Bundesheer emblem). But all contrary happens with this commercial specimen that lacks of those forementioned letters and symbols. What about the capabilities of any other FM 78? It´s a very light knife, its blade is prepared to face any circumstance so much to be used by a soldier, a camper, a survival and/or rescue specialist, etc. Its hilt provides a perfect grip and keeps an ideal balance to be launched (a requirement demanded by the special forces of the Jagdkommando from the Österreichisches Bundesheer); inclusive this knife is very light to transport, can be carry it hidden by a soldier, or visibly mounted on his/her combat harness, using an inverted position in the upper area of ​​the strap so close to her/his shoulder and be ready for a quick response. In reference to its price in the all world markets, this knife is very affordable and cheaper than similar ones belonging to prestigious brands, but offering the same or better advantages than the more expensive (obviously, it depends of each person likes and needs). And what about its system of fitting it to the StG 77? It´s a perfect solution for any moment in which a bayonet is required. However, to use it as such, we must remove the plug of its integrated pommel allowing us to introduce the lug/support of our StG 77, or also an AUG but only in case that "this rifle" was equipped to acept the mentioned lug/support; by contrary, this operation would turn impossible because both FM 78 and 81 weren´t designed and constructed with the traditional attaching mechanism used by any bayonet. And though we have the 2 compatible weapons (rifle & knife/bayonet) the task to fit both together neither isn´t so easy: we need to remove the plug (because it is firmly adjusted) with the help of any metal element (flat screwdriver, thin edge from a blade of a knife/folding knife, or any similar thin tool), and in addition, we must be careful in where we keep the plug (pockets of our clothes or other place) because it can be lost in any time. In my opinion, that design should be better if the manufacturer would choose a screw plug instead a pressing one. Inclusive, that choice would help to introduce in the free compartment some few small items like the ones transported by the survival knives. (I did a proof introducing the handle under a water for demonstrate that the mentioned compartment is waterproof, but the ideal proof should be better by under 5 meters deep). For lovers of large blades such as those used by OKC3S, M9, L3A1, AKM, KCB77, they will not like the one used in the FM 78 (maybe they would change their likes with the serrated type from the FM 81); and people who love that the scabbards have the system of joining the blades and using them as wire cutters, or those ones that have a sharpening stone included, unfortunately they will be disappointed with both Feldmesser. But hey!, we shouldn´t forget that the FM 78 was developed under requeriments from the Austrian Special Units and if the final product was how they required it, I suppose their reasons would have had. And also we must consider its economic cost that helps a lot to solve any of the points against.
Comentario:
éste cuchillo de campo tiene un diseño excelente y una construcción innovadora, de alta calidad y resistencia, cómoda, económica y 100% funcional (¿Recuerdan el eslogan "Glock Perfection"?). Mi Feldmesser es un modelo comercial fabricado por la compañía austriaca solo para ese propósito, sin embargo, este tipo de cuchillo es el mismo que el desarrollado exclusivamente para las Fuerzas Armadas pertenecientes a ese país; pero la diferencia es que el ejemplar militar fue estampado en el ricasso izquierdo de su hoja con las letras BH (BH significa BundesHeer = en traducción alemana sería Ejército Federal); y además, es posible observar otra marca: un triángulo invertido dentro de un círculo (este es el emblema del Bundesheer). Pero todo lo contrario sucede con este espécimen comercial que carece de las letras y símbolos mencionados. ¿Qué hay sobre las capacidades de cualquier otro FM 78? Es un cuchillo muy ligero, su hoja está preparada para enfrentar cualquier circunstancia tanto para ser utilizada por un soldado, un campista, un especialista en supervivencia y / o rescate, etc. Su empuñadura proporciona un agarre perfecto y mantiene un equilibrio ideal para ser lanzado (un requisito exigido por las fuerzas especiales del Jagdkommando del Österreichisches Bundesheer); inclusive, este cuchillo es muy liviano para transportarlo, puede ser llevado escondido por un/una soldado, o montado visiblemente en su arnés de combate, usando una posición invertida en el área superior de la correa tan cerca de su hombro y estar listo para una respuesta rápida. En referencia a su precio en todos los mercados mundiales, este cuchillo es muy asequible y más barato que los similares que pertenecen a marcas de prestigio, pero ofrece las mismas o mejores ventajas que las más caras (obviamente, depende de los gustos y necesidades de cada persona). ¿Y qué hay de su sistema de adaptación al StG 77? Es una solución perfecta para cualquier momento en el que se requiera una bayoneta. Sin embargo, para usarlo como tal, debemos quitar el tapón de su pomo integrado, lo que nos permite introducir el soporte de nuestro StG 77 o también un AUG, pero solo en caso de que "éste rifle" estuviese equipado para aceptar el mencionado soporte; por el contrario, esta operación se volvería imposible porque ambos FM 78 y 81 no fueron diseñados y construidos con el mecanismo de fijación tradicional utilizado por cualquier bayoneta. Y aunque tengamos las 2 armas compatibles (rifle y cuchillo / bayoneta), la tarea de unir ambas no es tan fácil: necesitamos quitar el tapón (porque está firmemente ajustado) con la ayuda de cualquier elemento metálico (destornillador plano, el borde fino de la hoja de un cuchillo / navaja /cortaplumas, o cualquier herramienta delgada similar), y además, debemos tener cuidado en dónde guardamos el tapón (bolsillos de nuestra ropa u otro lugar) porque se puede perder en cualquier momento. En mi opinión, ese diseño debería ser mejor si el fabricante escogiera un tapón de rosca en lugar de uno de presión. Inclusive, esa opción ayudaría a introducir en el compartimento libre algunos artículos pequeños como los que transportan los cuchillos de supervivencia. (Hice una prueba introduciendo la empuñadura debajo del agua para demostrar que el compartimiento mencionado es impermeable, pero la prueba ideal debería ser mejor por debajo de los 5 metros de profundidad). Para los amantes de las hojas anchas, como las usadas por OKC3S, M9, L3A1, AKM, KCB77, no les gustará la que se utilizó en el FM 78 (tal vez cambiarían sus gustos con el tipo serrado del FM 81); y las personas que aman que las vainas tengan el sistema de unirse con las hojas y usarlas como cortadores de alambre, o aquellas que tienen una piedra de afilar incluida, desafortunadamente estarán decepcionados con ambos Feldmesser. Pero, oiga!, no deberíamos olvidar que el FM 78 fue desarrollado bajo los requisitos de las Unidades Especiales de Austria y si el producto final era como ellos lo requerían, supongo que sus razones habrían tenido. Y también debemos considerar su costo económico que ayuda mucho a resolver cualquiera de los puntos en contra. 

Clarification I:
years ago, when I bought this Glock Two-tone, I perfectly knew that I had the nice opportunity to add this exclusive commercial model to my collection. Obviously it isn´t a 100% bayonet, all contrary because this characteristic is a one more additament of that this field knife can offers to its users. But I always have considered as a knife-bayonet and at the momment to acquire it I felt happy to have with me, and always looking for the exact time to prepare a file accompanying it with its corresponding images. The best thing about this Feldmesser is that it doesn´t bother its user with the annoying and bulky ring from the crossguard like the ones utilized by the modern bayonets for a correct adapting to the muzzle flash suppressors from the actual tactical rifles. Keep in mind, that there were several models of german bayonets made from the mid XIX Century and until the mid XX during the well famous 2GM, which they lacked of the adjusting ring for the rifle / carbine muzzle, opting to have a small base with a barely semicircular shape, ideal to be the support for the firearm muzzle. However, it was necessary to have in their pommels a more extended slot to insert the elongated lug of its corresponding rifle or carbine, which it allowed to hold firmly the bayonet and without the need of the classic ring, many times uncomfortable for its user. Obviously, this exclusively system utilized by the StG 77 will be always useful solely if it contains the adapter to fit inside the FM 78/81, in case we have an AUG with a bayonet adapter, it will be generally the same as the one that has the M16 / M4 or other similar systems of weapons (this depends on how the purchase order was ordered to the manufacturer since there are StG 77 and AUG without any adapter to attach bayonets) being only possible to fit any knife-bayonet that is designed for that system like US M7, OKC3S, M9, KCB 77, several models of EICKHORN, ONTARIO, CAMILLUS and other manufacturers with superb reputation from both the USA and Europe, and also some Replicas from Eastern countries, including certain "Fakes" of the named ones which can be fixed and ...with no problems!, (it´s incredible!). Now, if you only want to acquire a knife that is necessary "for all kinds of tasks assigned to a knife" (and regardless of whether it can be turned into a bayonet) any FM 78/81 will be a great option to choose and surely you will not be disappointed.
Aclaración I:
hace años, cuando compré este Glock Bicolor, sabía perfectamente que tenía la buenísima oportunidad de agregar este modelo comercial exclusivo a mi colección. Obviamente no es una bayoneta al 100%, todo lo contrario, porque esta característica es una adición más de la que este cuchillo de campo puede ofrecer a sus usuarios. Pero siempre lo he considerado como una cuchillo-bayoneta y al momento de adquirirlo me sentí feliz de tenerlo conmigo, y siempre buscaba el momento exacto para preparar un archivo que lo acompañara con sus imágenes correspondientes. Lo mejor de este Feldmesser es que no molesta a su usuario con el anillo engorroso y voluminoso de la guarda como los que usan las bayonetas modernas para adaptarse correctamente a los supresores de flash de los rifles tácticos reales. Tengan en cuenta, que hubo varios modelos de bayonetas alemanas hechas desde mediados del siglo XIX y hasta mediados del XX durante la bien afamada 2GM, que carecían del anillo de ajuste para el rifle / carabina, optando por tener una pequeña base con un forma apenas semicircular, ideal para ser el decanso para el cañón de arma de fuego. Sin embargo, era necesario tener en sus pomos una ranura más extendida para insertar el soporte alargado de su correspondiente rifle o carabina, que permitía sujetar firmemente la bayoneta y sin la necesidad del anillo clásico, muchas veces incómodo para el usuario. If you are in the search of one of these "oldie field knives" you will immediately distinguish it by the old commercial logo of the company. Don´t forget that other companies manufactured this same knife model and They are not Fakes but True Originals which they were built by EICKHORN, WEYERSBERG (the logo is a trumpet), PUMA and some other manufacturer. These knives can be found: 1_ with a similar aspect than mine (they are not two-tone) or 2_ with the appearance to the first Feldmesser, well distinguishable by the scabbards without the notorious key to secure the knife to the sheath. My recommendation is that you must have patience because they aren´t easy to get, mostly they are yet used and perhaps they present damage over or inside their structure, both in the knife as in the scabbard or with their plug missed. And for those who specialize in the acquisition of "impossible models" I comment you that in the Old-Smithy website is mentioned that there were first models which were made by the company ZEITLER called Zeitler 76 and Zeitler 77, predecessors of the Glock FM 78 and resulting very difficult to find them . Aclaración II:
si buscan uno de estos "cuchillos de campo viejitos", lo distinguirán inmediatamente por el antiguo logotipo comercial de la empresa. No olviden también que otras compañías fabricaron este mismo modelo de cuchillo y No son Falsificaciones sino Verdaderos Originales los cuáles fueron construidos por EICKHORN, WEYERSBERG (el logotipo es una trompeta), PUMA y algún otro fabricante. Estos cuchillos se pueden encontrar: 1_ con un aspecto similar al mío (no son de dos tonos) o 2_ con apariencia al primer Feldmesser bien distinguible por las vainas sin la notoria tecla para asegurar el cuchillo a la funda. Mi recomendación es que deben tener paciencia porque no son fáciles de conseguir, la mayoría son usados ​​y tal vez presentan daños sobre y dentro de su estructura tanto en el cuchillo como en la vaina o, con su tapón perdido.
